I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU TO......

January 11, 2018 by John Peery

TRY A NEW SPECIES OF FISH IN A RESTAURANT!

This is something that I do as a rule 100% of the time.  If I walk into a restaurant and see a fish that I don’t recognize, I order it immediately.  It has gotten much tougher for me in recent years, but for many inexperienced fish eaters, this will be very easy.  For people who eat a lot of fish, it may be tougher to find a new one, but restaurants are trying to offer a greater variety these days.  If you are running out of fish to try, go to a sushi restaurant.  They tend to be full of surprises.

All you have to do to complete this challenge is pick up a menu and order a new fish that you haven’t tried before.  It can be any type of seafood.  To maximize your chances of enjoying your new fish, look at the menu ahead of time and compare the options to other seafood that you have tried.  Seafood Sherpa has profiles of almost 150 species of fish.  You can use these to get an idea of what type of new fish might appeal to you.  The profiles HERE show the general characteristics of each fish, lists of similar fish, and sustainability information.

Broaden your horizons a bit and enjoy something new this week.  There are a lot of choices out there if you just make the effort to find them.  You may want to try a familiar preparation of a new type of fish.  For example, you might like fish tacos and think of them as a safe bet.  You can probably find them somewhere, made with a fish that you haven’t tried.  That’s pretty safe, since you can’t go too wrong with a fish taco.
